Bucks Fizz - Now Those Days Are Gone

Title : Now Those Days Are Gone
Artist : Bucks Fizz
Year : 1982
Chart : #8 UK
Album : Are You Ready

Bucks Fizz are an English pop music group, formed in 1981 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. They won with "Making Your Mind Up", which is still their best-known song. The group was initially made up of four vocalists: Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston, whose gimmick was that they were all blond. The group went on to have a successful career around the world, although their biggest success was in the UK where they had three No.1 singles and became one of the top-selling groups of the 1980s. Worldwide their record sales exceeded 15 million. They never made it to the US, they never had any single or album that charted States side.

The group has since splinted into 2 entities. one, going by the name of Bucks Fizz, and the other The Original Bucks Fizz.

The Original Bucks Fizz
In December 2004, G, Nolan, Baker and Preston reformed briefly after 15 years to be part of 'The Here and Now Tour' of the UK. To distinguish this line-up from G's other group, they renamed themselves The Original Bucks Fizz (despite Preston not being an original member). Due to prior commitments with the current lineup of the group, G could not make all of the dates played, but did appear at some shows. Following this, Nolan, Baker and Preston subsequently performed more shows together as a three-piece under the same title and featured in the Congratulations show, the 50th Anniversary of Eurovision in Copenhagen. In September 2008, Preston, Baker, Nolan and Aston reunited for a makeover show Pop Goes the Band for Living TV, which was screened in March 2009. In April 2009, Preston announced that she was leaving The Original Bucks Fizz due to other commitments. Soon after it was announced that original member Jay Aston would be joining Baker and Nolan in the group for live shows - the first time she has been a part of Bucks Fizz since 1985.
In October 2009 this line-up embarked on their first tour, encompassing 10 venues across the UK as well as a special gig at Newcastle to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their coach crash.
The group are also in plans to record a new album, due to be released in 2010 and a live DVD of one of their recent concerts. They are on the comeback trail ....

about the song :
personally, i'm not a fan of the band. they remind me too much of ABBA. yeah, i do know their songs ... but they've never been a staple on my players (walkman, tape decks, turntables, what-have-you's) ... but this is probably the song i'm most fond of (back then, & even now) from the group.

Written by Andy Hill and Nichola Martin and produced by Hill, this was the group's only single to feature member Mike Nolan on lead vocals, it was also the last to be co-written by Martin, who founded the group. The song was a stark contrast to the group's singles up to this point, which had all featured very full pop productions, this time, the song was partly an a cappella piece with soft harmonies and a gentle orchestral build towards the end. One reviewer remarked that the impressive vocal structure would give Bucks Fizz some much-needed credibility.
  • The song centres around the narrator who looks back on younger days and recalls how innocent he was then, while the promotional video for the song saw the group in a World War II setting.
  • Released in June 1982, this single followed up two No.1 hits, "My Camera Never Lies" and "The Land Of Make Believe" and reached No.8 in the UK Charts.
  • In Australia and many European countries, this single went unreleased, with tracks, "Are You Ready" or "Easy Love" being released in its place. The song was featured on the group's second (and most popular) album, Are You Ready. It was also later featured as the B-Side to "You and Your Heart so Blue" - a 1985 single by the group.
  • A newly recorded version of "Now Those Days Are Gone" was released in 2006 on the Bucks Fizz album, The Lost Masters, while an early demo by Hill was released in 2008 on The Lost Masters 2 - The Final Cut.This demo featured an expletive, which necessitated the album to include a Parental advisory sticker.

lyrics :
Thinking…
Long ago when we were young and free
Love happened easily
And dreams never died,
Life sang a pretty song

Now those days are gone.

Crying…
Finding comfort in the friends we knew,
Now it’s just me and you
Trying alone;
We used to get along

Now those days are gone.

Playing with words
When there’s nothing much to say,
Searching to find what we lost along the way.
Could it be one day our feelings changed?
I hope we see it through
Cos I just can’t stand the thought
of life without you.

Dreaming…
Whispers echo on the summer wind
Back when the love begins,
When nights were so warm
With stars we could wish upon…

Now those days are gone.

We had the chance
But we lost it all somehow,
Broken the spell
And our dreams lie heavy now
Could it be someday our feelings changed?
I hope we see it through
‘cos I just can’t stand the thought
of life without you.

‘cos I just can’t stand the thought of life without you.

Thinking…
Long ago when we were young and free
Love happened suddenly,
And we couldn’t see
Where we were going wrong

Now those days are gone.
