lyrics :
I was the third brother of five,
Doing whatever I had to do to survive.
I'm not saying what I did was alright,
Trying to break out of the ghetto was a day to day
fight.
Been down so long, getting up didn't cross my mind,
I knew there was a better way of life that I was just
trying to find.
You don't know what you'll do until you're put under
pressure,
Across 110th Street is a hell of a tester.

Across 110th Street,
Pimps trying to catch a woman that's weak
Across 110th Street,
Pushers won't let the junkie go free.
Across 110th Street,
Woman trying to catch a trick on the street.
Across 110th Street,
You can find it all in the street.

I got one more thing I'd like to y'all about right now.
Hey brother, there's a better way out.
Snorting that coke, shooting that dope man you're
copping out.
Take my advice, it's either live or die.
You've got to be strong, if you want to survive.

The family on the other side of town,
Would catch hell without a ghetto around.
In every city you find the same thing going down,
Harlem is the capital of every ghetto town.

Across 110th Street,
Pimps trying to catch a woman that's weak
Across 110th Street,
Pushers won't let the junkie go free.
Across 110th Street,
A woman trying to catch a trick on the street, ouh baby
Across 110th Street,
You can find it all in the street.
Yes he can, oh

Look around you, just look around you,
Look around you, look around you, uh yeah

Drive-By Truckers - Let There Be Rock

title : Let There Be Rock
artist : Drive-By Truckers (DBT)
year : 2001
chart : did not chart
album : Southern Rock Opera (2001/re-released 2002)

about the song :
great song, great band ... give them a listen if you havent

an autobiographical piece about a teenager who was saved by arena rock acts like Molly Hatchet, Ozzy Osbourne, and AC/DC.

this song shares the same title as AC/DC's, which they duly credited it with with the last line of the song ...

lyrics :
Dropped acid, Blue Oyster Cult concert, fourteen years old,
And I thought them lasers were a spider chasing me.
On my way home, got pulled over in Rogersville Alabama, with a half-ounce of weed and a case of Sterling Big Mouth.
My buddy Gene was driving, he just barely turned sixteen.
And I'd like to say, "I'm sorry", but we lived to tell about it
And we lived to do a whole lot more crazy, stupid, shit.

And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet
With 38 Special and the Johnny Van Zant Band.

One night when I was seventeen, I drank a fifth of vodka, on an empty stomach, then drove over to a friend's house. And I backed my car between his parent's Cadillac's without a scratch.
Then crawled to the back door and slithered threw the key hole, and sneaked up the stares
And puked in the toilet.
I passed out and nearly drowned but his sister, DD, pulled me out.

And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet
And the band that I was in played "The Boy's are Back in Town".

Skynyrd was set to play Huntsville, Alabama, in the spring of 77, I had a ticket but it got cancelled.
So, the show, it was rescheduled for the "Street Survivors Tour".
And the rest, as they say, is history.

So I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads in 82
Right before that plane crash.
And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw AC/DC
With Bon Scott singing, "Let There Be Rock Tour".

With Bon Scott singing, LET THERE BE ROCK!

Allman Brothers Band - Blue Sky

title : Blue Sky
year : 1972
chart : did not chart
album : Eat A Peach

about the song :
Allman's guitarist Dickey Betts wrote this about his Native American girlfriend, Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig. They married in 1973 and divorced 2 years later.

This was the first time Betts sang lead on an Allman Brothers song. He also sang lead on their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man."

For a while, Betts refused to perform this after his 1975 divorce with Sandy, whom he wrote this for.

This was released after Duane Allman's death on Eat A Peach. The album is dedicated to him.

Betts and Sandy Bluesky had a daughter, Jessica, on May 14, 1972. Betts wrote "Jessica" about her a year later.

Duane Allman and Dickey Betts played on the bridge solo - one playing "lead" lead, the other playing "rhythm" lead. They switch up half way through - listen very carefully and you will hear them synch up on a riff for two measures or so right around 2:30 into the track.

lyrics :
Walk along the river, sweet lullaby, it just keeps on flowing,
It don't worry 'bout where it's going, no, no.
Don't fly, mister blue bird, I'm just walking down the road,
Early morning sunshine tell me all I need to know

Chorus
You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day.
Lord, you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way,
Turn your love my way, yeah.

Good old Sunday morning, bells are ringing everywhere.
Goin to Carolina, it won't be long and I'll be there

Chorus

Walter Egan - Magnet And Steel

title : Magnet And Steel
artist : Walter Egan
year : 1978
chart : #8 Billboard Hot 100
album : Not Shy

about the album :

Originally released in 1978 by Columbia Records, this is of course the album that yielded Walter Egan's biggest hit, "Magnet and Steel." Not Shy is Egan's second official solo album. It was produced by Lindsey Buckingham, Richard Dashut, and Walter Egan and on several tracks features backing vocals by Lindsey Buckingham and/or Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.

Not Shy has been re-released on compact disc twice. The first cd release is dated 1993 and was distributed by Razor and Tie Music Corp. In 2004, the album was again re-released on compact disc as a two-in-one compilation with Fundamental Roll on Acadia/Evangeline records.

about the song :
Stevie Nicks sang on this track, and provided inspiration for the lyrics. Walter Egan told us about this song:
"In 1976 I was living in Pomona, California and I had a notion to write a song with the 'stroll' beat (made famous by Chuck Willis) and so began the rough outline of what was tentatively called 'Don't Turn Away Now.' Now, this was also at the time of putting together my first album, Fundamental Roll, and my two new friends and producers, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks and I were starting the recording process.
On the night when Stevie did the background vocals for my song 'Tunnel o' Love,' my nascent amorous feelings toward her came into a sharper focus - I was smitten by the kitten, as they say. It was on my drive home at 3 AM from Van Nuys to Pomona that I happened to be behind a metal flake blue Continental with ground effects and a diamond window in back. I was inspired by the car's license plate: "Not Shy."
By the time I pulled into my driveway I had formulated the lyrics and come up with the magnet metaphor. From there the song was finished in 15 minutes.
It was especially satisfying to have Stevie sing on 'Magnet,' since it was about her (and me)."

This was used in the 1997 movie Boogie Nights.

This was Egan's only Top 40 chart entry for his own recordings, though he also wrote Night's first hit, "Hot Summer Nights," which reached #18.

"Ooh, ooh, ah
Now, I told you so you ought to know (ooh, ooh,ah)
It takes some time for a feeling to grow (ooh, ooh,ah)
You're so close now I can't let you go (ooh, ooh,ah)
And I can't let go
With you I'm not shy to show the way I feel
With you I might try my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel

I can't hope that I'll hold you for long (ooh, ooh,ah)
You're a woman who's lost in your song (ooh,ooh,ah)
But the love that I feel is so strong (ooh, ooh,ah)
And it can't be wrong
With you I'm not shy to show the way I feel
With you I might try my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel

[break]

With you I'm not shy to show the way I feel
With you I might try my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel
For you are a magnet and I am steel
For you are a magnet and I am steel"

Steve Forbert - Romeo's Tune

title : Romeo's Tune
artist : Steve Forbert
year : 1980
chart : #11 Billboard Hot 100
album : Jackrabbit Slim (1979)

about the song :
Even though it states that "Romeo's Tune" is "dedicated to the memory of Florence Ballard" on the sleeve of the album Jackrabbit Slim (1979), the song is not really about the Supremes singer who died in 1976. The song was actually written about a girl from his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, but was dedicated to Ballard because, as Forbert explains, "That seemed like such bad news to me and such sad news. She wasn't really taken care of by the music business, which is not a new story."

about the singer :

Critics hailed him at the time as "The new Bob Dylan" because of a similar vocal timbre and thoughtful songwriting. The front cover of his second album, Jackrabbit Slim, encourages such comparisons with its simplicity: a black and white photo of Forbert playing a well-worn Martin acoustic guitar with a capo on it, his shirt tinted green. The record was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and produced by John Simon, who had worked with The Band.

Forbert has a cameo appearance in Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video, playing her boyfriend.

In 1984, Forbert had a disagreement with his record company (Nemperor), which apparently did not want to release a recording he made. The record was shelved, and contractual issues prevented Forbert from recording for a number of years afterwards. Although he has never again recorded a song as commercially successful as "Romeo's Tune," his first recording for Geffen Records, 1988's Streets of This Town, has been credited with "intelligence and maturity that bested most of his previous work." His The American in Me follow-up in 1992 was praised as "equally strong." Both Geffen releases however were ineptly promoted, and Forbert's work there has been called under appreciated. He continues recording to this day ... and has a new album out soon ...

"Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Bring me southern kisses from your room

Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say everything's alright
Let me smell the moon in your perfume

Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall
And there's always something more
Lost in talk, I waste my time
And it's all been said before
While further down behind the masquerade
The tears are there
I don't ask for all that much
I just want someone to care

Answer right now

Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say, everything's okay
Come on out beneath the shining sun

Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say, everything's alright
Sneak on out beneath the stars and run, yeah

Oh, yeah, yes
Oh, yes

It's king and queen and we must go down round
Behind the chandelier
Where I won't have to speak my mind
And you won't have to hear
Shreds of news and afterthoughts
And complicated scenes
We'll (whether)? or weather down behind the light
And fade like magazines

Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say, everything's okay
Bring me southern kisses from your room
Hey, hey
Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say, everything's alright
Let me smell the moon in your perfume
Oh, no
Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Let me see you smiling back at me
Heeeey
Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say, everything's alright
Hold me tight and lovein' love is free
Whoa-oh
OK"

year : 1981
chart : #24 Billboard Hot 100
album : John O'Banion

Just two days shy of his 60th birthday, O'Banion died of blunt force trauma as a result of an accident he suffered while touring in New Orleans, Louisiana. "Heard a promise in the wind
Then I saw you walkin in
Tell me baby where ya been so long
Waited all my life to feel this strong

I love you like I never loved before
And evry day I love you so much more
Feeling like I never felt so sure
Love you like I never loved before

Lonely days and lonely night s
Finlly gone and out of sight
I'll do evrything within my power
To make your life get sweeter hour by hour

Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die

title : And When I Die
artist : Blood, Sweat & Tears
year : 1969
chart : #2 Billboard Hot 100
album : Blood, Sweat & Tears

"I'm not scared of dying,
And I don't really care.
If it's peace you find in dying,
Well then let the time be near.
If it's peace you find in dying,
And if dying time is here,
Just bundle up my coffin
'Cause it's cold way down there.
I hear that its cold way down their.
Yeah, crazy cold way down their.

[Chorus:]
And when I die, and when I'm gone,
There'll be one child born
In this world to carry on,
to carry on.

Now troubles are many, they're as deep as a well.
I can swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell.
Swear there ain't no heaven and I pray there ain't no hell,
But I'll never know by living, only my dying will tell.
Yes only my dying will tell.
Yeah, only my dying will tell.

[Chorus]

Give me my freedom for as long as I be.
All I ask of living is to have no chains on me.
All I ask of living is to have no chains on me,
And all I ask of dying is to go naturally.
Oh I want to go naturally.

Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.
Look out children,
Here he comes!
Here he comes! Hey...

Don't want to go by the devil.
Don't want to go by demon.
Don't want to go by Satan,
Don't want to die uneasy.
Just let me go naturally.

and when I die,
When I'm dead, dead and gone,
There'll be one child born in our world to carry on,
To carry on.
"

album : The Turn Of A Friendly Card

one of my all-time personal favourite ...

"time
Flowing like a river
Time
Beckoning me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river
To the sea

Goodbye my love
Maybe for forever
Goodbye my love
The tide waits for me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea

Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

Goodbye my friends (goodbye my love)
Maybe for forever
Goodbye my friends (who knows when we shall meet again)
The stars wait for me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea

Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

Forevermore

Tracy Chapman - Unsung Psalm

title : Unsung Psalm
artist : Tracy Chapman
year : 2000
chart : did not chart, never released as a single
album : Telling Stories
a truly beautiful and haunting tune, one of Chapman's finest

"There would be psalms sung by a choir
I would have a white robe a halo newly acquired
Id be at peace and Id have no desire
If Id lived right

There would be cherubs with tiny harps arrows and bows
Id have a halo and a flowing white robe
Id be enfolded by a celestial light
If Id lived right

But Im feeling hot and bothered under the collar
I feel the sweat breaking out on my brow
I feel the heat and I know its the passion
The love I cant disavow

If this is a dream wake me up now
If this is a movie lets edit these scenes out
It would be a pg instead of an x rated life
If Id lived right

Some would call me a cheat call me a liar
Say that Ive been defeated by the basest desired
Yes I have strayed and succumbed to my vices
But I tried to live right

But I have no regrets no guilt in my heart
I only feel sadness for any pain that Ive caused
I guess I wouldnt bother to worry at all
If Id lived right

Do you live by the book do you play by the rules
Do you care what is thought by others about you
If this day is all that is promised to you
Do you life for the future the present the past

If there is one thing I know I know I will die
If anyone cares some stranger my critique my life
I may be revered or defamed and decried
But I tried to live right

There would be psalms sung by a choir
I would have a white robe a halo newly acquired
Id be at peace and Id have no desire
If Id lived right"
